Food and Drink in Liverpool is fantastically varied, from sleek fine dining to indie bistros and pop-up foodie heavens to high-street favourites, modern British – take a look at our best places for a classic Roast here – to the finest foods from around the world.

Take a look at our restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs and the best bars and nightlife.

If you’re looking for hot spots, take a look down Bold Street for multicultural vibes or Castle Street for sophisticated lunch and drinks.

Local produce is at our fingertips, with Wirral and Formby asparagus, Southport shrimps, Knowsley lamb, and Liverpool beer and gin some of the stars of the scene. Many restaurants and cafes are proud to use local produce.

Whilst we’re talking about food, it seems only right to mention the famous local delicary – Scouse! A tasty stew of meat and vegetables, served with crusty bread and beetroot or red cabbage (depending on personal preference and opinion). It’s how the people of Liverpool got their nickname ‘Scousers’, and is on the menu at many cafes and restaurants.

If that’s not enough, we actually have a day every year to celebrate the dish that gave us our name, Global Scouse Day takes place in February every year. If you fancy giving it a try before then, take a look at our ‘Where to Try Scouse’ blog.

Things to do in Liverpool. Well, the only problem you might have is choosing exactly what. With more museums and galleries than any other UK city, that’s a good place to start.

Culture in Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool have a number of museums and galleries across the City Region. Whether you’re into maritime, the world and its creatures, art, or even if you want to deep sea dive into the history of Liverpool City Region you can, for free at the Maritime Museum, World Museum, Lady Lever Art Gallery or the Museum of Liverpool.

There’s modern art at FACT and both traditional and radical at Tate Liverpool. That’s just the start, for more culture you won’t have to look far.

While you’re here, keep your head up and take in the breath-taking architecture of the city. Hop onto a tour bus or a walking tour. If you’d prefer to stay indoors pop over to RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architecture’s National Architecture Centre.

Sports in Liverpool

Sport’s covered too. Whether you’re after a stadium tour of the reds or blues, a ticket to the most iconic horse race in the world, or fancy getting wet ‘n’ wild on the Mersey or teeing off on the green, scroll down to see more. Prefer to watch rather than get involved? You’ll want to take a look at our blog on the best places to watch the footie in Liverpool.

Music in Liverpool

We’ve music venues all over the city region. From the historic Cavern Club to the modern and creative Invisible Wind Factory. Liverpool’s the home of legendary Cream, where house music began and still thrives. You’ll catch them on the docks and in the parks.

Classical music homes in Liverpool too at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Just round the corner you’ll find the Arts Club that plays host to DJ sets and club nights. Brand new bands take to the stage at the Jacaranda, Phase One and the o2. If music’s high on your agenda, then of course we’ve got a blog for that too.

Food and Drink in Liverpool

Food festivals, food halls, fine dining and fine wine. Liverpool’s food and drink scene is thriving and can be enjoyed in many quarters. Liverpool Waterfront plays host to the Bordeaux Wine Festival every year, while Duke Street Market houses some of the finest small plate restaurants all year round.

A truly international city boasts truly international cuisine – from the Italian Club Fish to Vegan Curries at Sanskruiti. Don’t know what tickles your fancy? Here’s eighty, yes eight zero dishes from across the globe. Oh and we almost forgot. You can’t visit Liverpool without delving into a piping hot bowl of scouse.

Outdoor Spaces in Liverpool

More parks than Paris! A bold, but true statement. Liverpool’s Sefton Park is the largest Grade I listed park in the UK. It boasts a lake and 200 acres of parkland to explore. We’ve botanic Gardens in Southport and Wirral, a Red Squirrel Reserve in Formby and not forgetting the miles of coastline. Green spaces are valuable and should be treasured as well as enjoyed. Explore Liverpool’s outdoor spaces, but please respect them too.

This Christmas Liverpool is really coming to life with light! After a nine day light festival comes the Christmas season where the twinkling doesn’t stop.

Liverpool Christmas Lights
City Centre
Liverpool will be wrapped in fairy lights this festive season. Bohemian Bold Street will sparkle with festoons while cosmopolitan Castle Street will be complete with edgy lanterns.

At Liverpool ONE the giant tree will be back, putting on a display of over 200 heart lights that dance in the moonlight. As well as the tree, keep an eye out for Rudolph and his other giant festive friends.

The real showstopper is Church Street’s ‘Liverpool Light Spectacular.’ A 70 metre LED tunnel of light and music that will takeover one of the city’s most popular shopping streets.

Liverpool Waterfront
The Royal Albert Dock will glisten as its colonnades are wrapped with hundreds of tiny bulbs. A brand-new digital artwork, will take festive revellers on a journey to another world in this iconic and historic part of the city.

On the Pier Head take a look up to the iconic Liver Building for a brand-new light display called ‘Flight.’

Liverpool Christmas Shopping
Independent Stores
We know everyone loves a Christmas Market and Liverpool’s Christmas Market will be back on St George’s Plateau selling unique gifts from independent traders. Draped in festive lighting and with the stunning backdrop of St George’s Hall grab a hot drink and explore.

Red Brick Vintage Hangar in the Baltic Triangle is a treasure trove of clothes, records, jewellery, furniture, and quirky items for unique gifts. Winter Arts Markets take place at some of Liverpool’s most beautiful locations including the Anglican Cathedral and Sefton Park Palm House.

Big Brands
Liverpool ONE is home to over 300 stores including the big brands and favourite high street stars, from designer rig-outs to cute keepsakes. MetQuarter is packed out with luxury brands, a boutique cinema and even a florist.

St John’s Shopping Centre is an Aladdin’s cave of stores, including well-known brands as well as independent clothing and shoe stores for all those festive outfits!

Christmas Events
Liverpool Pantomimes
Liverpool is bursting at the seams with pantos (Oh yes it is!). It’s all a bit Rock ‘n’ Roll at the Everyman Theatre while the M&S Bank Arena will have you laughing your wooly socks off at their family friendly edition. We’ve written a guide of all the pantos kicking off this year.

Film Screenings
There’s nothing quite as festive as an old movie screening in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The authentic piano welcome and the way the screen rises out of the stage, it gives us all the festive feels.

For extra grandeur, St George’s Hall will be screening your favourite yule-tide movies with the Luna Winter Cinema including Elf, The Holiday, Love Actually and of course, Home Alone.

Over at the Albert Dock, Independent Liverpool are hosting a floating cinema complete with twinkly lights and all the festive movies.

Tropical Christmas
Just up the road though there’s no sign of snow or reindeers. It’s a tropical Christmas at the Sefton Park Palm House, because Santa is on holiday.

This Christmas it has to be Liverpool! Don’t forget to Do it Your Way by using our itinerary planner here. Share your way by using the hashtag #VisitLiverpool.
